Softball, softball, softball

Summer came and went, didn't it? Who stole our most relaxed season and replaced it with a whirlwind of activity? At our house, softball seems to be the culprit. Summers are always busy with our favorite sport. Our daughters are just far enough in part in age to never be on the same team, so usually he goes one way with one and I got the other way with the other. But this year there weren't enough girls in our oldest daughter's age group and most importantly, there wasn't a coach. So out of desperation, my husband and I tried our hand at coaching. We rounded up everyone willing to play summer league softball and moved our youngest daughter up to be on the team (at her request.) It made for a major obsession but I have no regrets. All four of us going in the same direction, being on the same team, was amazing!! We didn't win a lot of games, but we had a blast and the days flew by. And now school's back in session.

I'm writing on a tight deadline and our oldest daughter came home yesterday (second day of school) with a schedule. . . high school softball practices start next week after school. Oh, and the coach has offered to let our youngest daughter practice with the team, even though she's still too young to play in high school games. What's a devoted softball mom to do? I'm charging up my little laptop and getting ready to follow the neon yellow ball. Since I'm not coaching, I can at least write while they practice!

COMMENTS:
How wonderful! I know what you mean about bidding summer farewell. My son starts fourth grade on Monday, and my baby girl starts Kindergarten. Gulp.

Your love of softball is inherited, I believe. I remember going to games in Newport with you when we were in school to watch various members of your family play. I especially remember going the summers that Daddy was sick and in the hospital. It was so nice to be able to go somewhere and not have to worry about him for a while. Good luck to your girls' team.

It's October and I'm still wishing for those less hectic days! :-) Maybe we will have a snow day soon and we can all stay home and catch up.
I am looking forward to reading your book The Reluctant Cowgirl that I won at WordVessel. My sister has recommended the book Simply Christmas as well, she told me it's great! Guess I'll be heading to the bookstore soon.
